Clip a pulse oximeter on a fingertip and it shines two wavelengths of light through your skin, reading how much of each gets absorbed by your blood. Oxygen-rich blood absorbs light differently from oxygen-poor blood, and the device turns that difference into a percentage your SpO2, or oxygen saturation.

A dedicated fingertip pulse oximeter and a smartwatch's SpO2 feature both use the same underlying idea light absorption but not the same accuracy. The fingertip device uses a stronger, more stable signal path through a fingertip; a wrist-mounted sensor works through thinner light penetration and more motion, which widens its margin of error. The single most common mistake with a home pulse oximeter is treating one low reading as a crisis, or one normal reading as a clean bill of health. Neither view is right. What matters is the direction and the persistence of the number.


The 92% and 90% thresholds
  • 95–100%: normal for most healthy adults no action needed.

  • 93–94%: worth a repeat reading in a few minutes; if it stays there, mention it to your doctor.

  • 90–92%: call your doctor the same day, especially alongside breathlessness or fatigue.

  • Below 90%: this is a medical emergency get to a hospital, don't wait it out at home.


Trends beat single readings

A reading of 94% taken once, on a cold morning, with a poorly fitted clip, tells you very little. A reading that has drifted from 98% to 94% over three days of a respiratory illness tells you a great deal. This is exactly why logging readings not just glancing at them matters, particularly for elderly parents recovering from a chest infection or flu.


Buying and Using a Pulse Oximeter Correctly in India

A reliable pulse oximeter in India costs anywhere from ₹300 for a basic finger-clip model to ₹2,000 for one with Bluetooth logging and a larger display. Price beyond that point buys convenience, not necessarily more accuracy look for a CE or FDA-cleared model over an unbranded one regardless of budget.


Common mistakes that skew a reading
  • Nail polish or acrylic nails — remove polish before testing, it absorbs light and distorts the reading

  • Cold hands — warm your fingers first; poor circulation drags the reading down artificially

  • Movement — stay still for the 30–60 seconds the device needs to settle on a stable number

  • Wrong finger size — a clip that's loose on a small finger gives an unstable reading


Accuracy differences across skin tones

This matters more than most product packaging admits. Published research on pulse oximetry most notably a widely cited New England Journal of Medicine analysis found the devices were meaningfully more likely to miss low oxygen levels in patients with darker skin tones, overestimating the true reading. Given the range of skin tones across India, this isn't a rare edge case; it's a reason to treat any borderline reading as worth double-checking, not dismissing.

  • SpO2 consistently reading below 94% across multiple careful attempts

  • Breathlessness at rest or with minimal activity, even if the reading looks borderline-normal

  • Bluish tinge to lips or fingertips (cyanosis)

  • A low reading that appears alongside fever, cough, or chest tightness

  • Any sudden drop from a person's known personal baseline


Emergency: An SpO2 reading below 90%, or severe breathlessness with confusion or bluish lips, is a medical emergency go to the nearest hospital immediately, don't wait for a repeat reading.
